Cpl Harold L. Cross Jr. graduated from Columbia High School, New Jersey in 1933 and Bowdoin College in 1937. He attended Harvard Law School and had been engaged in private law practice in Washington, District of Columbia.

He enlisted at Fort Myer, Virginia on 25 May 1943.
