Pfc John T. Morrissey graduated from Holy Trinity School and Mamaroneck High School. He worked in the James Butler stores in Mamaroneck and Port Chester where his father was manager for several years and was later employed by the First National store.

He enlisted in New York City, New York on 10 January 1941 and was sent to North-Africa where he landed with the first group of American troops on 8 November 1942. he also participated in the Sicilian campaign before his unit was sent to England to prepare for deployment in Northern Europe.

He was reported wounded in action in September 1944 and, after recovering, rejoined his unit.

He was the father of a two-year old daughter he had never seen.
