James enlisted at Camp Blanding, Florida on 13 November 1942. He served in front-line combat with the 60th Infantry, 9th Division“Go Devils“in Europe and North Africa. He had a younger brother Everett who was a Marine during WWII. Both parents and brother are buried at Hughes Cemetery, Nassau County, Florida. After leaving South Carolina, the family lived in St. Augustine in 1930 before moving to Nassau County.
