Pvt Jay D. Shellabarger worked for the International Harvester Company before moving to Minneapolis in 1940. There he worked as a pattern maker for General Mills, Inc.

He enlisted in December 1943, and was sent overseas with in June 1944.

His twin sister, Mrs Fay Thornburg, died in September 1944, and as far as is known, Pvt Shellabarger had never learned of her death.
