2nd Lt William J. Barnum graduated from Albion High School in 1934 and Cornell University in 1938. He taught vocational agriculture at Livonia for one year.

He enlisted on 24 July 1941 in Buffalo, New York and had been stationed at Fort McClellan, Alabama as a bugler. He was selected for Officers Training School at the beginning of 1943.

He is buried next to his brother Capt Eugene E. Barnum Jr.
