His parents were immigrants from Slovenia. At the age of five, his parents took him to their native land, where he completed five years of school. He returned to the U.S. with his parents in October 1939.

Edward B. Kuznik graduated from John Carroll University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He worked in an automobile factory.

He enlisted in Cleveland, Ohio on 14 August 1943.
He was reported wounded in action in France in June and August 1944. For this wounds he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal twice.
