S/Sgt Leonard Hovenstein graduated from Coal Township High School.

He joined the Regular Army in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on 3 October 1940 and was serving at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked the harbor. He volunteered for the infantry and was already a veteran of the campaigns in North Africa and Sicily.
