Cpl Jose Medrano graduated from El Paso High School and attended the College of Mines, preparing to become a teacher when he joined the Regular Army Reserve at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas on 13 October 1942.

He entered the ASTP program at the University of Wisconsin, June 1943 and was went overseas on 15 February 1945.

Both his parents were born in Mexico.
