T/5 Merrill L. Govig graduated from the DeKalb Township High School and was a farmer before he enlisted in Chicago, Illinois on 28 November 1941.

He was reported wounded in action on the first day of the D-Day invasion for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time. His wounds were not serious and he was soon able to return to his unit.
