Pfc Lester Lunning graduated from Radcliffe High School and attended Iowa Aircraft School. He worked at Hayes Manufacturing in Grand Rapids, Michigan, making airplane wings. During his six month residency in Grand Rapids, he met and married his wife, Celia Ann.

He enlisted on 4 December 1942 and was sent overseas in January 1944.

He was wounded on 7 June 1944 in Normandy and hospitalized in England for two months. After recovering he rejoined his unit.
