More information

Pfc Raymond H. Middlekauff enlisted in Baltimore, Maryland on 17 January 1944.

On 18 July 2019, the DPAA, announced that Pfc Middlekauff was accounted for on 8 April 2019.

He was reported missing in action on 4 December 1944, during the Battle of Hürtgen Forest, near Grosshau, Germany. Attempts to locate Pfc Middlekauff following his loss were unsuccessful.

In June 1946, a set of remains was recovered from a minefield in the woods west of Grosshau, near the area of pfc Middlekauff's loss. These remains could not be identified at the time and were eventually interred as an unknown at the Ardennes American Cemetery in Neupré, Belgium.

Following the close of hostilities in Europe in 1945, Middlekauff was among the hundreds of soldiers still missing from combat in the Hürtgen Forest. On 5 December 1945, after no information on his whereabouts, the War Department declared him deceased and non-recoverable, one year and one day after he went missing in action.

Following thorough analysis of military records and AGRC documentation by DPAA historians and scientists, one set of remains, Unknown X-2773 Neuville, which was buried at present day Ardennes American Cemetery in Belgium, was determined to have a likely association with Middlekauff. Unknown X-2773 Neuville was disinterred in April 2018 and sent to DPAA for analysis.

To identify Middlekauff’s remains, scientists from DPAA used dental and anthropological analysis, as well as circumstantial evidence. Additionally, the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System used mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and Y-chromosome STR DNA (Y-STR) analysis.

Pfc Middlekauff was buried on 5 February 2020 at Arlington National Cemetery.

A rosette will be placed next to his name at the Walls of the Missing at Margraten.
