More information

1st Sgt William L. Kenyon graduated from Central High School where he was a star baseball player.

He enlisted in Albany, New York on 27 February 1941 and was sent overseas in February 1944.

Sgt Kenyon was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for gallantry in action. The cited: The rifle company of which Sgt Kenyon was first sergeant, with its company commander seriously wounded in a mortar barrage and all of its platoon leaders either seriously wounded or killed in action, had dropped back two hedgerows in disorderly manner. Voluntarily assuming command, Sgt Kenyon, at great personal risk, speedily whipped his remaining men into an effective unit as an enemy counterattack was developing. Knowing that a number of his wounded men still lay in front of his lines, Sgt Kenyon moved forward approximately 150 yards, in the face of withering enemy fire, and evacuated four wounded men to places of comparative safety. The courage and initiatieve displayed by Sergeant Kenyon reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.

Sgt Kenyon was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Foy, Belgium.
