Pfc Johnson was employed as a linotype operator before he enlisted on 10 December 1943 and was sent overseas in June 1944.

He was reported wounded in action on 25 August 1944 for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time. He returned to the frontlines after about 6 weeks.

He was killed by a sniper.
