More information
Pvt George J. Mildenstein died of wounds received the last day of the 22nd Infantry's participation in the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest as the Regiment was being relieved. He was hit by an artillery round while crossing an open field in the Hürtgen Forest.Pvt. Mildenstein was killed instantly.
Per Bill Snider (foxhole buddy): "George was approximately 12 feet to my right and Roland was perhaps 15 feet to my left. As the second shell landed. I hollered to George to take off as they were zeroed in on us. The third shell landed to my left and all three of us were hit with shrapnel. I crawled over to the hole that the shell made and hollered to George and Roland to crawl over the hole. Roland said he could not move as he was hit in one arm and one leg. I hollered again for George but there was no answer and no movement. We were hit around 1200 or 1300. No one came as periodic shelling continued."
