Pfc Joseph P. Skrepenak attended Coughlin High School where he played with the school band and was a former member of Frank Lombardo's orchestra

He enlisted in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania on 30 March 1943.

He first served with a paratrooper unit where he played in the regimental band. He was later transferred to the infantry.
