Sgt William E. Sutton attended high school for four years and was employed in a New York hotel before he enlisted in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania on 17 April 1941. He was sent overseas in September 1943.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Grand Failly, France.
