More information

Sgt Richard O. Matthiessen graduated from South Philadelphia High School in 1942.
The remains of Sgt Matthiessen were recovered in 1960 by German workers laying a pipeline near the Belgian border. Until that time, he had been listed as missing in action after taking part in an assault on a German pillbox near Oudler, Belgium in October 1944.
His identification tag was found in the shallow grave near a dynamite bunker. Army officials investigated and found dental work and the shoe size matched Matthiessen“s army records.
