Pfc Ervin N. Johnson was a skilled mechanic and repairman of motor vehicles before he enlisted in Indianapolis, Indiana on 4 October 1943. He was sent overseas in March 1944.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for actions on 6 August 1944. The citation stated:
"On 6 August 1944, Pvt Johnson's company was attacking a German force and were delivering heavy machine gun fire on the position from five different points. Pvt Johnson worked himself to the flank of this company position in order to knock out the machine guns. During the operation he encountered 10 enemy riflemen who were attempting to flank the company. Pvt Johnson personally accounted for at least four of the enemy and his action was succesfull, enabling the company to hold this position. The gallant act on the part of Pvt Johnson was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military spirit."

He is remembered at the Grove Lawn Cemetery in Pendleton, Madison County, Indiana.
