Sgt Bernard J. Bilskemper was sent overseas in February 1944 and participated in the landing at Utah Beach on 6 June 1944, during which he was wounded in action, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart the first time.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Andilly, France.

His brother George was killed in action in North Africa and is buried at the American Military Cemetery on Carthage, Tunesia.
