1st Sgt Charles A. Hankins attended Petoskey High School. He was an instructor at both Camp Roberts and Camp McQuide in California before he joined the Regular Army on 30 December 1939.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Foy, Belgium.
