Pvt George W. Downing graduated from Powell High School before he enlisted at Fort Thomas Newport, Kentucky on 3 June 1944.He was reported seriously wounded on 15 January 1945 and died two days later. He was overseas for only two months when he was killed.
His brother Charles served with the U.S. Army and his brother Chester served in the U.S. Marines during the war.
