1st Lt. William D. Burchfield enlisted in Houston, Texas on 25 January 1943 and was an instructor before he was sent overseas in late 1944.He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for protecting a position of great tactical importance despite intense enemy resistance.
He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Foy, Belgium.
