Francis Doneau was born and reared in Gladstone. He attended All Saints parochial school and for several years delivered the Daily Press. He enlisted in Wausau, Wisconsin on 8 August 1940 and went to the Panama Canal Zone where he served for three years, returning to the States in July, 1944. After a furlough spent with relatives he went to Fort Bliss in Texas, for reassignment and was sent overseas in September.
