Francis Doneau was born and reared in Gladstone. He attended All Saints parochial school and for several years delivered the Daily Press. He enlisted in Wausau, Wisconsin on 8 August 1940 and went to the Panama Canal Zone where he served for three years, returning to the States in July, 1944. After a furlough spent with relatives he went to Fort Bliss in Texas, for reassignment and was sent overseas in September. He was in France the following month and had seen considerable action since he was a paratrooper.
