Cpl Hugh J. Akins finished high school in 1941 where he was above average in basketball and in football.

He was a metal worker before he volunteered for the Army of the United States in Greensburg, Pennsylvania on 2 November 1942.

In the Army he was called 'Rosey' because of his rosy cheeks, but at home he was called 'Foo'.

His brother, 1st Lt Francis E. Akins, is buried at the American War Cemetery Ardennes.
