Pfc Robert D. Cassady was an architect before he joined the National Guard in Pasadena, California on 3 March 1941.

In March 1945 the 508th was relieved and transferred to Sissonne, France for rest and relaxation after enduring months of combat in the snow during the Battle of The Bulge. Shortly after arriving in France, Pfc Cassady died in a general hospital after handling a faulty hand grenade.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Champigneul, France.
