2nd Lt Boyd A. Alexander graduated from Phillips High School in 1940 where he was known as an all-around athlete. He went to the state in track and also played basketball and football while in school here. While at New Mexico Military Institute he ran the fastest quarter mile in the state track history. He enlisted in March, 1943, while instructing at Roswell Military Institution, where he graduated in 1943.

He entered the service on 5 August 1943 and received his first training at the Officers Training Camp, Fort Benning, Ga. He was later transferred to Fort Adair, Oregon, where he volunteered for the Paratroop Division and was returned to Fort Benning for his paratroop training. A request came for volunteer paratroop officers and Lt Alexander again volunteered, and was one of five selected for his grade standing. He was also jump master in his paratroop work. A leave was granted him from July 7 through July 21, during which time he visited his family, then he reported at Fort Meade, Md., for embarkation and went overseas immediately.
