Pfc Ray M. Johnson worked on a farm before he enlisted at Fort McClellan, Alabama on 29 September 1942.

He was killed in the bushes at the Keizer Karelplein by enemy small arms fire while he lay on top of his comrade Jim Blue, protecting him with his own body.

Pfc Ray M. Johnson was initially buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Molenhoek, The Netherlands.
