Pvt James E. Mattingly was an embalmer and undertaker before he joined the Regular Army in Seattle, Washington on 19 February 1946.

He was killedduring a practice jump in the vicinity of Heddernheim, Germany, when his parachute failed to open due to an incorrect hookup.
