Pvt George J. Bates attended the LaSalle Institute and Catholic Central High School and was employed by Tiny Town Togs, Inc.He enlisted in Albany, New York on 7 January 1943.
He was wounded in The Netherlands on 28 October 1944 for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time. He returned to his unit on 11 November 1944.
His brother, Pfc John J. Bates, was a prisoner of war in Germany.
