Pvt John V. Cummings attended college and was a clerk.He enlisted in New York City, New York on 30 November 1943.
He was taken prisoner of war in the vicinity of Schlausenbach, Germany on 16 December 1944 and was imprisoned at Stalag IV-B.
He was killed during an Allied air raid on the city of Halle, Germany. The raid was very big and most of the city was demolished, resulting in more than 20,000 casualties. For weeks the dead were taken out of the buildings and buried in wooden boxes without any regard to nationality.
His remains were discovered at the Gertrauden-Friedhof Cemetery of Halle on 29 August 1946 where he was mentioned in the records under the name of a different American serviceman.
