2nd Lt Norman A. Engle attended 3 years of high school and was a clerk.
He joined the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in Chicago, Illinois on 19 January 1942. He was later transferred to the infantry.

He was taken prisoner of war in the vicinity of Schlausenbach, Germany on 16 December 1944 and was imprisoned at Stalag XIII-D in the vicinity of Nuremberg, Germany.
During a raid on the Nuremberg railroad yard on 5 April 1945, performed by the U.S. Army Air Force, a column of American officers was hit with 29 men killed.
