More information
S/Sgt Edward R. Wertz enlisted in Peoria, Illinois in March 1941.He was held prisoner in POW Camp Stalag IV-B in Muhlberg, Germany.
According to documents of the Polizei-Abteilung Duderstadt, dated 28 April 1949, Sgt Giffey died of pneumonia in the community hospital of Duderstadt, Germany and was initially buried at the cemetery of this town. Taking into account the information in which camp he was held prisoner of war, it is not clear, based on the information currently available, how and when he would have ended up in this hospital.
As the Soviet Army was advancing on the Eastern front, German authorities decided to evacuate POW camps but Stalag IV-B wasn't one of these camps. However, it is still possible that S/Sgt Wertz was moved to another camp. However, it is still possible that S/Sgt Wertz was moved to another camp. It is also possible that he was held in another camp and that this was not recorded correctly.
Further research on this is needed as soon as other documents can be found.
