Pfc Frederick B. Sang graduated from Lockport High School in 1941 where he was active in tennis and involved in the Senior Play. He attended the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania.

He joined the U.S. Army Reserve on 22 February 1943. He was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program and sent to Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania. When the ASTP was disbanded in March 1944, he was sent to Camp Claiborne for training. He was sent overseas in September 1944.
