Sgt Robert W. Nickel attended Carnegie Tech and the University of Pennsylvania.

He joined the U.S. Army Reserve on 23 February 1942 at Fort G. Meade, Maryland. He was sent overseas in September 1944.

He was married to Helen Brackemeyer on 3 October 1943.
