More information

Andrew Francis Borda graduated from Dunbar Township High School in 1937 and was employed as a brakeman by the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad before he enlisted on 14 December 1942.

He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal posthumously. The citation cited: For heroic service in connection with military operations against the enemy in Belgium, 3 January 1945. When his company (Infantry with 84th Division) was without a medical aid man during a withdrawal under intense enemy artillery mortar and small arms fire, Private First Class Bordas, completely disregarded his own safety, made numerous trips through the area to carry wounded men to safety. On 7 January 1945, Private First Class Bordas was killed in action. The disdain for danger, unselfish action and commendable conduct displayed by Private First Class Bordas presents an excellent example of those soldierly qualities which are in accordance with the finest traditions of the military service.
