William Mc Clain Jr. attended West Philadelphia High School. During high school Mc Clain had an ambition to go into business. He joined the Business Science Club and worked as a salesman and a business staff member for the Western news. He also played the bugle, was a cheer-leader and was a school senator.

After high school as Mc Clain started working for the American Store Company. By 1940 he had a job as a manager

He enlisted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 21 July 1943.
