S/Sgt Vernon E. Bickley attended Yakima High School for three years where he was the quarterback on the football team. He worked as a baker before he enlisted in Spokane, Washington on 31 December 1943. He trained at Camp Wheeler, Georgia before he was sent overseas in July 1944.

He joined his unit from the 53rd Replacement Battalion on 16 August 1944.

He was killed by anti-tank fire, directed at a tank upon which he was riding.
