Pfc Alan F. Smith enlisted in Kalamazoo, Michigan on 21 January 1943. He joined his unit from the 48th Replacement Battalion on 14 July 1944.He was initially buried in a temporary grave at Margraten on 4 March 1945. After being disinterred and after the cemetery was given a permanent status, he was given his final resting place on 19 January 1949.
Pfc Smith is remembered at the Dimondale Cemetery in Dimondale, Eaton County, Michigan.
