More information

S/Sgt Bobby G. Ghere attended Arcola High School were he, and also his brothers, excelled in athletics and let their teams to many victories in football, basketbal and track.

He was married to Mary Bright on 1 September 1943

He enlisted on 9 September 1943 and was sent overseas on 6 April 1944.

He was wounded in action in France on 9 July 1944, resulting in hospitalization in France and England until 28 August. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.

His brother George, serving with the 95th Division, went to Bob's unit three days after his death and was told that Bob had been killed. With George being able to speak with the Colonel and Captain of Bob's unit, the family knew exactly how he lost his life. Fighting had been heavy and ammunition was running low. He went from his group to the rear for ammunition and was captured and killed by the German soldiers who had infiltrated the area behind the battle area.

The family had seven brothers serving in WWII. Bobby was the only brother who did not return home after the war.

He left behind his widow and a son he had never seen, the eleven month-old Danny Gene.
