Pvt Joseph J. Timothy enlisted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 7 October 1942.

He was severely wounded in action on 6 July 1944 for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. After recovering he rejoined his unit on 10 November 1944.

His brother Robert was killed in action on 24 October 1943 and is buried at Sicily-Rome American Military Cemetery and Memorial.
