S/Sgt Edward J. Carroll attended high school for two years and was a sales clerk.He enlisted in New York City, New York on 4 March 1943.
He joined his unit from the 92nd Replacement Battalion on 14 July 1944 and was promoted to staff sergeant on 24 July 1944.
S/Sgt Carroll was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross postumously. The citation reads:
For extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 331st Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces during World War II. Staff Sergeant Carroll's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 83rd Infantry Division, and the United States Army."
According to the after action report his unit was fighthing in the vicinity of Lendersdorf in the Hürtgen Forest on the day he was taken prisoner. He died of his wounds in the German field hospital Nr. 132 that was located in Bleialf, Germany the same day. His remains were discovered in an isolated grave at the civilian cemetery in Bleialf in March 1945 and temporarily interred in the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Foy, Belgium on 14 March 1945.
