Pfc William I. Long worked as a brakeman at the Glen Burn Colliery in Shamokin.

He enlisted in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on 23 October 1943. He received training at Camp Croft in South Carolina and Fort Meade, Maryland before he was sent overseas in May 1944. He remained in England as a member of the 41st Replacement Battalion until he was transferred to E Company of the 331st Infantry Regiment, together with 36 other replacements.

He was promoted to private first class on 4 September 1944.

On 17 January 1945, Amy, his wife, received notification that he was missing in action in Germany from the War Department, while she was a patient at Geisinger Hospital in Danville, where she had given birth to their daughter, Carol Jeane, on 13 January 1945. Amy received notification he was killed in action on 18 January 1945.
