Pfc George S. Sullivan's mother passed away in 1919 from Tuberculosis of the lungs and his father died in 1934 due to injuries (hit by a truck) on a highway construction project

He worked in Newport News shipyards.

He enlisted in Richmond, Virginia on 7 March 1941.
