In a letter to his wife Hazel, written for John by the Chaplain in the hospital on 21 April 1945, a few days for his death:"I have been injured in the last few days, but now I'm getting along fine. Please do not worry as I am receiving the best of care. I am no longer on the front line but recuperating in a hospital. Keep on writing to me although I won't be able to write to you so often until I feel a little better. Lots of love, John"
