More information
Pfc Anthony B. Vabolis attended high school for 4 years and worked in a mchine shop. He enlisted at Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania on 4 March 1943. He trained at Fort Jackson, South carolina and Camp Atterbury, Indiana. He was sent overseas in July 1944.On 25 December 1944, Malmédy was mistakenly bombed by American bombers for the second time. The bombers crews thought they were over their target, St. Vith. At the time M Company's kitchen was situtated in Hotel De La Poste, better known as Hotel Nicolette. The company suffered 14 men killed, 2 wounded, 2 seriously wounded and 3 lightly wounded. It can be assumed that Pfc Vabolis was one of the casualties.
The facts about this bombing raid and what had happened were kept a secret for the press and the families of the casualties until many years after the war.
At the time of his death his brother Albert was serving with a medical detachment of the Army Air Forces in France.
