More information

Louis Benore graduated from Libbey High School and worked for an interior decorator. enlisted on 9 March 1944 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal posthumously. The citation cited: Upon his own initiative he completely familiarized himself with the various details of mortal timing, which enabled him to operate his weapon quickly and effectively. He had often been subjected to heavy enemy fire but has courageously remained at his post. Pvt Benore´s courage and coolness under fire have contributed greatly to the succesfull operations of the squad with which he served.

On 23, 24 and 25 December 1944 the city center of Malmédy was bombed repeatedly by the United States Army Air Forces in a series of friendly fire incidents. Approximately 200 civilians were killed in the tragic attacks, while the number of American casualties has never been revealed by the United States Department of Defense. It is estimated that 69 American servicemen lost their lives of which a great number is still listed as missing in action. Most likely, Louis Benore was one of those casualties of friendly fire.
