More information

John Rescigno attended high school for two years and was a cement finisher.

He enlisted in New York City, New York on 26 November 1940.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal. He citation reads: For gallantry in action on 13 December 1944, in ***. Prior to an attack against an enemy held town, Sergeant Rescigno was guiding a patrol to a position from which it could assist the attack when suddenly artillery fire was brought down upon them. Sergeant Rescigno was knocked down by the concussion of a shell which burst next to him, and in falling his leg was badly injured. Nevertheless, he insisted upon continuing the mission with the patrol and succesfully completed his assignment. Following the assault on the town by his unit, Sergeant Rescigno once more exhibited exceptional fortitude by helping to carry the wounded back over a distance of three miles across rough terrain to the aid station. He was still suffering sharp pain from his injury, but performed his service gallantry and without complaints.
