S/Sgt Leo J. Kowalski St. Mary's and Alpena High Schools and was a painter by trade before he enlisted in Detroit, Michigan on 1 April 1941.

He was reported wounded in action on 4 July 1944. after recovering, he returned to his unit on 10 August 1944.

Four of his brothers also served during the war. They were deployed in Northern Europe, New Zealand, New Guinea and the Pacific.
