More information
Pvt John T. Boyd enlisted at Camp Forrest, Tennessee on 20 September 1944.There is a basketball jersey out at West High that has the nummeral 33 stitched on it, and that jersey should be treasured and kept by the school as a memorial. One of the best cagers to come out of prep basketball circles in Nashville pulled that blue jersey on over his head just before every cage tilt West played last year. The boy who wore that No. 33 throughout the 1944 season was John T. Boyd, 18, reported by the war department as killed in action in Germany March 24.
John graduated from West in 1944 and went into the army in September. He had been overseas since February. Boyd lettered in both basketball and football in 1942-1943-1944. He was selected for the All-City and All-Regional cage teams the latter year.
Not only was John a renowened athlete, he was prominent in other school activities, serving as president of the Junior and Senior classes. He was a member of the Pan-American Club, the Bachelors Cub and was active in dramatics.
