Sgt Richard A. Hoyt joined the Air Corps of the Regular Army on 27 October 1939. He served with the 8th Army Air Force in England where he had been promoted to the rank of sergeant before volunteering for duty in the infantry. He was then transferred to the 1st Division.His brother Clair Hoyt also served with the armed forces and was wounded in action in France on 25 January 1945.
